I said, “everyone in this room has a struggle, whether it’s heroin, cocaine, pills, booze, (mine was vodka, thank God I didn’t find something more) hurt relationships, mean people, and God help those of us who struggle with a cocktail of all of these. I have been worried about what people think about me for as long as I can remember, but today, that is gone. If we had cancer, there possibly would be people out raising money to help us pay for the treatment that we are receiving in here; but we don’t. We have a disease that is misunderstood, maligned, and even AA is mocked and is sometimes a punch line. I have often said in jest, when I was busy partying, ‘I’m not an alcoholic, I’m a drunk…alcoholics have to go to meetings. I wish that I could find a church where people are honest about what is going on in their lives, seeking a higher power, asking tough questions, and striving for the serenity of that brutal honesty.

About the Author
Keller is a native of South Carolina, where he continues to live with wife, his 3 adult sons, and 2 grandchildren so far. He works in sales, and the family enjoys camping, canoeing, hunting, offshore fishing, and college football. He continues to be sober and grateful.
