Have you ever wondered why the twelve disciples just suddenly, if not impulsively, dropped their entire worldly jobs and family to follow Jesus when he called them? Most conspicuous is the calling of the four fishermen who were apparently partners in a successful commercial fishing business; Simon (Peter), Andrew, James and John (the son’s of Zebedee).
By the time Jesus came to be baptized, John the Baptist’s ministry was well established, and crowds followed him everywhere (Mt 3:5-6). Jn 1:35-49 comments that the day following Jesus’ baptism the Baptist was standing with “two of his disciples” in Bethany where he had just baptized Jesus. The inference is that there were more disciples following him
It appears that Jesus’ followers came to follow Him by previous contact. The first five following John the Baptist’s ministry with Jesus, and the remaining seven following Jesus’ independent early ministry.

About the Author
Fritz E. Barton, Jr. MD served as Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center from 1977-2017. He also holds a Master of Biblical and Theological Studies (MBTS) from Dallas Theological Seminary. Having spent a career publishing literature reviews in medicine, Dr. Barton turned his analytic interests towards the perplexing controversies associated with Christianity. Dr. Barton and his family live in Dallas, Texas.
