A few years before C. S. Lewis became a follower of Christ, a colleague invited him to attend an academic fellowship organized by J. R. R. Tolkien. It was called the “Kolbitors.” Lewis’s attention was riveted by the name of the fellowship, and he remarked that it sounded Norse. The colleague replied, “It’s Icelandic for ‘coal-biters’.” It means those who sit so close to the fire they can almost bite the coals.”7 So, I invite you to join me as we draw close to the fire of God’s truth. Let’s fan the flame together. If we prefer not to bite the coals, we can still experience the heat of a burning passion to persevere with holy grit.
