As always, Mitch looked around the room at the variety of people in the place. He was sitting at the corner of the counter with a booth to his right with four young people sitting there still staring at him. He smiled and nodded at them. The waitress returned shortly with his order. He thanked her, and then he bowed his head to say grace. He raised his head and began to eat. One of the young people spoke up “Aw, you’re one of those hypocritical Christians aren’t you?” Some of the patrons heard the comment and were watching for a reaction. Mitch smiled, “Well, I am a Christian but I don’t believe the description of hypocritical fits my mold. But I am pleased that you noticed.” “Sounds like you think you are better than us,” jabbed the young man. “My all means, no sir, I’m just following the path I have chosen in life like you all have. My life and style may be different than yours but being better than someone else, I can’t say that I am. I try not to judge others,” Mitch calmly replied and he realized he was in both a confrontation and a teaching moment. “You hate us don’t you because we are gay?” one of the young ladies asked. The crowd was really quiet then. Mitch swiveled in his stool to face them. “Young folks, let me say something. First, how would I know that you were gay? Second and foremost, I don’t hate anyone. I love everyone because God loved me as a sinner. I sometimes do dislike or hate the actions of others but I don’t hate the person. That’s because God made us all in His image. Now, you have chosen your life style and that’s because God gave everyone free will to choose for themselves how they want to live on this earth. So let me ask you a question. “Do you believe in heaven and hell?” One said no and that when you die, you die. Another said that they never thought about it. The other two were silent. “Well, I believe that when you die, you either go to heaven and be in God’s presence or to hell and be condemned to an eternity of torment and suffering. I also believe that the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ, God’s own son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” “So where is your choice leading you?” Mitch preached. By that time everyone was listening. “I don’t believe that there is only one way to heaven,” the other girl said. God is supposed to be a god of love so he will not send anyone to hell.”

About the Author
P. L. Triplett is a respected Sunday school teacher and Christian layman. He served as a deacon and chairman of deacons as well as in many other positions within the church such as the finance committee, building committee and pastoral search committee. He is a degreed engineer with a degree from the University of Tennessee and East Tennessee State University. He has traveled internationally and became committed to his emphasis to reach, teach, encourage, and love people where ever and when ever.
