About the Book

Deafness is Deaf-initely not seen as a disability by many Deaf people! Writing Deaf with a capital “D” means someone is proud to be Deaf! It also means being part of a vibrant community with a beautiful language and culture. Sam is Deaf with a capital “D” and proud of it! Dak is beautifully Black with a capital “B” and proud of it! The two found each other at the swing set and have been the best of friends ever since. They see being Deaf and being Black as God-given gifts! In The Adventures of Sam and Dak, these two friends introduce their new friend—you!—to American Sign Language and show the true meaning of friendship through their experiences. Come along, join the fun, and learn a few signs from Sam and Dak!

About the Author

Drew Anne Allen met a girl named Sam years ago at her very first job at a School for the Deaf. She was earning her master’s degree in Deafness at the time, and this led her on to work at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, New York. Later, she worked with Deaf people at the Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center on Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia. Drew loves the playful feel of rhyme, the value of life lessons learned in everyday life, and, of course, the joys and lessons she’s learned from the many Deaf friends she’s known along the way.
