The settler's search for gold is a lot like the Christian journey. What was it about gold ore that was so valuable to the early American settler? Gold was a fast answer to the second part of his quest-- a better life, lifting him from the hard everyday life of the average settler to one of provision, better living, health, and abundance. If there were a treasure for Christians that could lift you to a place of victory, would you be willing to do what is necessary to get it? Interestingly, God asks us to seek this treasure like we would seek gold. The settlers' effort clearly speaks to us. They were willing to leave the east behind and venture through the frontier, risking everything they had for gold. The treasure that the Bible clearly says God's people are to seek is wisdom. He actually wants us to seek it with the same passion as we would seek silver or hidden treasure (Proverbs 2:4). Just like the settlers centered their lives around finding gold, God wants every other priority in life to be below our search for His kingdom. Matt 6:33 NKJV But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Amazingly, the payoff of wisdom is described in Proverbs as better than gold and precious stones like diamonds or rubies: Proverbs 8:10-11 NKJV Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold; 11 For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.
