“Are you still there?” the doctor inquired. Taking a deep breath, Marty quickly spoke up, identified himself, and asked the doctor to repeat what she had said. She did. He also asked for more details. Dr. Madison hesitated, then replied that she welcomed the opportunity to do so, but only in person.
Before hanging up, she informed Danielle that either she or Mrs. Rodgers’s next of kin needed to come to the hospital and identify the body. “If you come within the next two hours, her body will still be in the ICU. Otherwise, you will need to go directly to the morgue.”
“Morgue!” Danielle exclaimed, feeling a draining weakness in her body. Overwhelmed with grief, she remained in Marty’s embrace for about five minutes.
She wept for Sara and all her missed opportunities. She had a difficult time letting go of the last image she had seen of Sara—lying unconscious on the floor in her house. She would never, ever forget Sara’s sobs and pleas for her lost daughter. Danielle wept for Tricia, and the grief to come—when she found out there would be no more precious moments with her mother—moments before Sara had succumbed to the effects of the drugs. She wept for Gracie and the unanswered questions she undoubtedly would ask. “What about Gracie? How will we share this tragic news with her?” she moaned. With an overwhelming sense of guilt, she began to weep over her own missed opportunities. Was there anything else I could have, should have done? Were there any words left unspoken?
At that precise moment, the scripture that was inscribed on the infamous bookmark came to the forefront of her mind: “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and mind through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7, KJV).
“Peace. Talking about divine intervention. Isn’t it amazing how God always prepares His people? That glare directing me to this particular scripture was no coincidence,” she thought, whimpering.
“Lord, please help me embrace your spirit of peace,” she cried out.
“Wait … what was the other scripture that was bookmarked.” She picked up the paper where she had written the chapter and verse numbers. Smiling through her tears, she showed it to him.
They opened up his Bible and read: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, will not we fear, though the earth be removed and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof” (Psalm 46:1–3, KJV).
“I don’t know what to make of this,” Marty said, perplexed.
Danielle closed her eyes and concluded, “Just like the Bible instructs us. I’m going to hide both of these scriptures in my heart. I’m sure they will be needed for comfort during the days ahead.”

Heart-stricken, she regrettably released Sara’s hands and backed away—keeping a careful watch on her face. The paramedics rushed inside and took over. A preliminary diagnosis: cardiac arrest.”

Vanester M. Williams is the author of “The Girl from Chapel Hill: Her Journey of Faith, Forgiveness, and Freedom.” She has been a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for over 20 years. She is a host/speaker on a weekly broadcast called His Abounding Grace, a program under the ministry of When Christians Speak Talk Radio. She is passionate about encouraging others and teaching them how to strengthen their Christian journey. She is a retiree of the U.S. Federal Government, holds a degree in Biblical Studies, and a Certificate in Biblical Counseling Principles. She and her husband, Rick, have been married for over 46 years. They are the proud parents of two grown children, two grandchildren, and several godchildren. They enjoy each other’s company and happily reside in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
