Foundational Truth #1 - What’s happening on the inside determines what happens on the outside. Your heart is the seat of your feelings and your intellect. It is your mind, your emotions, and your decision-making process. That is the most important part of a person because the Bible says it determines the course of your life. From your heart, the mouth speaks. From your heart, decisions are made. From your heart, beliefs are established. Everything you are and everything you do begins on the inside.
Foundational Truth #2 - The enemy is actively trying to damage your soul. The enemy steals, kills, and destroys through attacks on your heart. The abuse, abandonment, neglect, grief, pain, and church hurt that we go through is intentionally amplified as much as possible by the devil.
Foundational Truth #3 - Jesus didn’t just come to save your soul, He also came to heal and restore it. Luke 4 gives us the job description of the ministry of Jesus. It was not only to preach the gospel, but also to set free those who have been crushed by tragedy, trauma, and trials. He was, and is, focused on healing the heart attacks that Satan has perpetrated against us.
Jesus came not just to give us life, but to give us abundant life. Not just salvation, but so much more than that. There is no area of your life that cannot and should not be affected by your relationship with God. There is nothing about which you can pray that God is gonna throw up a stop sign and declare it out of bounds. He is more than happy to walk with us through anything.
Our relationship with Him begins at salvation, but it doesn’t end there. Jesus didn’t die on the cross so that you could be forgiven and miserable. Forgiven and broken. Forgiven and hurting. Forgiven and numb. Forgiven and bound. He wants you forgiven, free, healed, and whole! The abundant life can’t happen if your soul is not healthy. If your heart has been attacked, Jesus wants to heal you.
There is hope for your hurting heart! I know that when you recognize the damage that has been caused you from your past, it can be overwhelming and it feels like you are destined to be that way until you die. That kind of hopelessness is a lie! There is hope for your hurting heart. You can be healed. You can be made whole. Your mind can be restored. Your thoughts can be purified. Your emotions can be mended. Your temper can be controlled.
The abundant life you’ve always dreamed of, the one you thought your abuser had taken from you, the joy you thought life had beaten out of you, is still accessible to you. It is not out of reach. It is not too late. You can be happy, healthy, and whole again. There is hope for your hurting heart!
The church I grew up in spoke only about saving my soul, there was nothing about healing my soul. Look at the words of Jesus, though.
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 NLT)
The invitation was not just for sinners to come and be saved, but for weary people to come and find rest. Sin is heavy. That’s not just the sins that you’ve committed, but it’s also the sins that other people have committed against you. It’s the abuse and the constant criticism. It’s not just the sin, but the heavy burdens that life throws at you—grief, loss, stress, and trauma. Jesus wants you to come to Him if you’ve experienced these things and find rest for what? Your soul! Not just the eternal part that needs to be saved, but the mind, will, and emotions that need to be healed and restored. He is offering you rest.
