Then her mind drifted. She remembered a time when she was about fourteen. She had been enamored with a certain boy at school. She had tried everything to make some impression on him. Nothing seemed to do the trick. Totally frustrated one afternoon she stormed in the house slammed her books on the table looked at her mother standing at the sink and said,
"He has no idea what he's missing, if he did, he wouldn't ignore me."
Her mother looked at her without speaking and let a little time pass. Finally, she spoke, "No, Campbell, no he doesn't. But that's his story and you are going to have to let him write it without you."
The words rolled around in her head “Let him, write it without you."
Was she going to have to write more of her own story than she wanted without her mom? It would seem like it might be.
She almost started crying again, but then she thought of all the wonderful times she had had with her mom and she felt only grateful. Throughout her life her mother had been there for her, constant and supportive. Until this last year when there was the possibility of losing her, she had not realized that she had taken her presence for granted, like the air she breathed. Should this disease relent and spare her mom, she would not do that again.

About the Book
“The Sun Can’t Hold a Candle” explores the relationships of the Rose family during the 1970’s in the Northwest. TJ and Helen Rose are just at the moment their three daughters are reaching adulthood. During what should be a joyous, exciting time, Helen is diagnosed with cancer and uncertainty enters their lives. For each one of them it will present challenges, but especially for Campbell the eldest daughter, as she copes with her mom’s diagnosis and a new marriage. All three sisters learn to cherish the values and love that their mom has always shared with them. It’s a story about how they find strength and learn anew about the value of love and faith during what may be one of the hardest years of their lives.
About the Author
Until her early adulthood Virginia Schroeder lived in and enjoyed the beauty of the Northwest. She moved to Southern California where she met her husband and they still reside. Over the years they have enjoyed traveling extensively in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. She never forgot the beauty of her home region.
She had a long career in education. As it drew to a close, she was diagnosed with cancer, not once, but twice. Fortunately, both times it was in the early stages.
These two experiences, growing up in the Northwest and cancer diagnosis were the springboard for writing the story of “The Sun Can’t Hold a Candle”. Writing a novel was the fulfillment of a life-long dream. Virginia hopes this story will be found especially meaningful for those who have had cancer or anyone who has suffered with a loved one who has had cancer.
