KING DAVID: A PORTRAIT OF RELENTLESS GRATITUDE
Relentless gratitude is gratitude that cannot be quenched by the waters of adversities. It is gratitude that cannot be extinguished by the troubles of life. It is undying gratitude that withstands the fiercest trials of life. It is a constant and continuing gratitude that does not fade and fluctuate with the vicissitudes of life. It is gratitude that persists and is dauntless even before death. This kind of gratitude is transcendent in nature and is the result of the marvelous work of God’s grace in human hearts. I observed that the life of King David typifies and animates for us the reality of relentless gratitude. Yeah! King David was relentless gratitude personified.
Why King David?
As a curious reader, you might ask, “Why is King David the preferred embodiment of relentless gratitude? Why not someone else?”
First, King David qualifies because he passed through unthinkable adversities, all kinds of life troubles, and fierce trials, and yet he managed to maintain not just a grateful heart—this would be an understatement—but a unique heart that fervently bubbled with overflowing gratitude toward God. David had a heart so full of gratitude that he could be likened to a whistling kettle filled with compressed steam—it will never be quiet until it vents the steam. Such was the gratitude of David. He was not a man to stay silent in discouragement, sorrow, and bitterness of heart. He was not a man of passive and latent gratitude. No! Instead, his lips and his instruments continually produced the sounds of pleasant praise and thanksgiving toward God. He was so full of gratitude toward God that it found diverse expressions as thoughtful praises, profound thanksgiving, exuberant dancing, radical generosity, deep devotion to God, and selfless service. David had a heart that was restless with gratitude. That a human could be this grateful despite experiencing what seemed to be an unending stream of adversities and hardships in life is, quite frankly, amazing and deserves careful study. With gratitude entrenched in his heart, David thrived and blossomed in the face of adversity. His life experiences practically depict the convergence of gratitude and the treasured quality of resilience; they vividly illustrate to us that gratitude works to make us stronger and more resilient.
Second, the amount of real estate in the Bible dedicated to the life of King David and the expressions of his gratitude is enormous. Apart from Jesus Christ, more is written about King David than any other character in the entire Bible. The life of David spans several books of the Bible (1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Chronicles, 1 Kings). His legacy of gratitude fills the book of Psalms, and some of his wisdom is echoed by his son King Solomon in the book of Proverbs. The allocation of significant and precious space in sacred scripture to the life and legacy of David suggest one thing—that God was deeply pleased with King David. Oh yes! God’s testimony of David found in Acts 13:22 confirms this. “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will do all my will.” King David qualifies as an embodiment of relentless gratitude and a learning reference because God was clearly pleased with his life of gratitude and has caused his legacy of gratitude—his Psalms and records of his deeds—to endure till this day. Now, if God has approved of a man and has certified the gratitude of such a man, it would be wise for us to settle down and study such a life.
Roadmap for the Case Study
The life of King David is full of many treasures—wisdom, valor, courage, mercy and compassion, outstanding leadership skills, strong faith in God, and particularly relentless gratitude. In this case study (a part of the book) divided into five phases that span the next five chapters of this book, I will be looking at the life of King David squarely with a focus on gratitude.
