Discovering Jesus

Day 1:
John 1

Have you ever looked through your parents’ photo album? Not just one of when you were little, but I mean one from before you were born. Maybe your mom wore a pair of pants that you can’t even believe. I remember seeing an old picture of my dad in a mesh shirt that would surely get him arrested today.

It’s wild to think that our parents had whole lives before we even came into the picture. They had their own childhood; their own fun experiences and their own heartbreaks. There was a time that the thought of you hadn’t even crossed their minds!

In the opening words of the Gospel according to John, this follower of Jesus explains who He really is before anything else. John explains that Jesus was there even at the very beginning - not just before His mom and dad. He was there before their moms and dads, and before their moms and dads and before their moms and dads and before… I think you get my point.

The entire Bible opens up with God creating the world, and John writes about how Jesus existed with God even back then! We know Jesus was there because John writes that the Word (or Jesus) gave life to everything that was created and that in the life, there was light. And that light shines in the darkness so strongly that it completely extinguishes the darkness.

This is Jesus that we’ll be looking at. See, God can be difficult for us to wrap our minds around. But Jesus is a concept we can understand more. Jesus is the God who we can see. He is the God who knows what it’s like to be human; to feel joy, sorrow, love, and pain. When God can seem abstract, Jesus is sent for us to visibly see Him. He’s not just so far away being we have no connection with. He is the God who came near to know what you and I deal with. Not only that but in Him the darkness of death, sin, and even the things in our own lives don’t stand a chance.

Remember:
Jesus is the God who we can see.
