Day 1—Gift 1 Let the Journey Begin Genesis 1:26–27 John 1:1 Jeremiah 29:11 Welcome to your first day of travel on your journey toward Christmas. Let’s start at the beginning of the Bible, in Genesis 1:26–27 (NIV), when God in His awesome power “made man in the image of God.” Yes, you read that correctly—man was made in a holy image by a holy God. He had a plan, a purpose, and a promise. It was all going to be unveiled, and the plan did unfold. The plan was written down as the Word, the purpose for a Savior was explained, and the promise was fulfilled by God. In the New Testament, John 1:1 (NKJV) says, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” From the beginning of time, the Word was and still is and will always be. God is with us and the Word is our guide for each moment. Let’s take a quick pause before we open the first gift. Ahhh! We need to prepare for this soul gift. It’s not a gift to tear into for we don’t want to drop the first gift. We all like getting new things at Christmas. We know when something has been regifted; we can tell by the packaging or by the fact that it is the wrong size or not our style. We all like opening something new, something special, a gift chosen just for us. So as you open the first gift and the rest of the daily gifts, enjoy them, as they were prepared just for you. All right, go ahead. Open your first gift. Gift 1—Beginnings In the beginning the Word gave life in His image so that a few thousand years later that created life could give back the Word—Jesus. Man had to be made in the image of God because many years later God’s Son would be living in the very image as man. Now that’s a one-of-a-kind plan and purpose. God has also created you with the same one-of-a-kind plan and purpose. There’s only one you! You had a beginning, also known as your birthday! On that very day, you came packaged with many amazing gifts: a one-of-a-kind personality, specially designed features, and a specific purpose. The Word even promises in Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT) to give you hope and a future. This book is a beginning that I pray is something you can share with others so they may have something new for their souls this time of year. Treasure the new beginnings and fresh starts from God in your life. There’s a Word waiting for you in each one!

About the Author
Heather R. Harrison earned a bachelor’s degree in theology, taught in Christian education for twenty years, coached twelve years at the high school level, was a guest speaker for a women’s conference, and has been an active member serving in the local church. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, writing encouraging words, singing, running races, walking her dogs, and drawing.
