I awoke in a sweat. It must have been a dream that woke me early that morning but I could see images, flashbacks from it. There had been a storm and strangers. There was smoke and a fire. I think it was in the barn, but I couldn't be sure. There was a little boy and a truck. Who did the strange faces belong to? There was a girl and a man, neither of whom I recognized. Then there was cinnamon. I could smell cinnamon and that's when I awoke. It was just a dream, I told myself.
Things could have turned out much differently that day. Things could have been a lot worse. We could have lost the barn and the horses but, thanks be to God, we didn't. However, our lives did change that day. The person that started the fire in the barn was in fact the same person responsible for the other strange happenings around the farm. The missing berries, the missing blanket, the missing bread and jam all made sense now.
The fire had started in the loft and burned through some of the floor boards and through a patch of the wall near where it had started. The roof had suffered some damage as well but the flames had barely gotten that high.
Luckily, we got to it with a garden hose before it had spread to the back side of the loft where the hay was kept. There would have been no stopping it had it gotten over to the hay. Hay burns faster than any man can work to put it out and that's a fact many farmers have learned the hard way. The barn could be repaired, that much had been determined, but the reason for the fire was the biggest shocker of all.
After the fire and smoke had been cleared, we started to look around for the culprit. To our estimation, there was no reason a fire should have ever gotten started in that barn, no reason at all! Suddenly, I noticed something out by a tree near the edge of the woods. Something that usually wasn't there. Something out of place. And that's when our lives changed in ways we could never have imagined. Even if we had let our imaginations get the best of us.

Humble Grey lives with his family on a small farm in Northern Kentucky. Living on a farm is hard, but for Humble and his younger brother, Bobby, there is always fun to be found. In the spring of 1947, life is good for this young farmboy until strange things begin to happen around the farm. First of all, things start going missing. Then, there is a fire in the barn. But who is responsible for these strange happenings? Humble is determined to find out and just when he does, a stranger shows up and really stirs things up. You will fall in love with the heartwarming story of Humble and his family as you learn the true meaning of work and play, celebration and loss.
About the Author
Regina Dodd Jennings grew up in Winfield, Alabama, lived twelve years in Kentucky, and now lives with her family just south of Atlanta, Georgia. While she is an Accountant by degree, she has had a long-time dream of being a writer. The Humble Tales of Humble Grey is her debut book and was inspired by her husband and two boys who have always loved “the farm” and being outdoors. Humble Grey was written with the hopes of transporting young readers back to a more simple time – a time without video games, cell phones, and the internet. She hopes that some life lessons and a little bit of history might be learned along the way too.
