Chapter 1The Revelation about Why We Go to the Bathroom
“We have reached our cruising altitude of 31,000 feet. You are now free to move about the cabin, but while you are at your seat, please keep your seatbelt fastened, just like we do up here in the cockpit.” The pilot’s voice jarred me awake.
I had drifted off thinking about the upcoming pre-production meeting. I turned and looked out the window at the sweeping display of God’s paintbrush as the evening sky deepened. “Would you like something to drink?” The flight attendant smiled at me. I ordered a ginger ale and went back to the window. Silently, in my heart, I told God how much I appreciated his colors, his composition, and his artistry.
A little later dinner arrived–chicken with mystery sauce, wilted arugula with high fructose dressing, and a small slice of plastic cake. Par for the course. I said grace and continued to watch the fading sun as I ate. Soon the smiling face cleared the dishes and offered coffee and tea. And then folks started getting up and going to the bathroom.
This struck me as funny. I had seen this scene a hundred times before, but this evening it struck me as hysterical. People go to the bathroom after eating and drinking. We all have to do it. Every day. Why? So I decided to ask God. This is the way God and I communicate. I just have this natural relationship with Him like I have with any other person. So if I have a question or think about something, I ask Him about it. And He answers me because He is God and He knows everything. The Bible says in James if any of us lacks wisdom to let him ask of God and God gives to all men liberally and upbraids not and it will be given to us. So when I want to know something, I just ask the Lord.
I was sitting there talking to the Lord and I said, “Lord, You’re really smart. When You designed us, You could have designed us any way You wanted. Why did You make us go to the bathroom?” Doesn’t that strike you as funny? Why must we go to the bathroom and eliminate waste material from our bodies several times a day in the form of liquid, and at least once a day in the form of solid waste? Doesn’t that strike anybody else as weird that God did that? He’s God, after all, and could have designed us any way He wanted to. But He burdened us with the need to urinate and defecate for the rest of our lives. So that we will always have to go to the bathroom. Till the day we die.
I thought it was pretty bizarre. But God is smart, and He told me why we go to the bathroom.
He said, “Son, it’s a picture. It’s an image of what you need to do in your spiritual life, like what you have to do in your physical life every day. As much as you need to do it in your physical life every day, you need to do in your spiritual life every day.”
And I thought, Wow! And I knew that He was showing me something important.
