“So, how do I look?” Ronnie asked as she came into my living room.
I was lounging on the sofa wrapped in my favorite blanket watching a movie. It was just at the good part, so I did not immediately look up when she entered. Once that scene was over, I turned my attention to her and had to sit up to appreciate what I was seeing. She was standing before me looking like someone who just stepped off the runway at a fashion show. The dress fit her like it had been designed just for her. She was curvy in all the right places and the material of the dress made her appear to float as she walked.
When I did not immediately respond she looked at me with a worried expression on her face. “What is it? Is it too tight? Does it make me look fat?”
“Just the opposite,” I said. “You look gorgeous. That dress looks like it was made just for you and you for it. That blue really does suit you and you shimmer when you move.”
I got up to inspect the dress more closely. “I didn’t appreciate the intricate details of this dress initially, but it is magnificent. The cut of it is perfect for you. It hints at the treasures underneath but is still elegant and dignified without being trashy.”
“The lady at the spa really did a good job with your hair and makeup. It looks natural and not overdone. It highlights your hazel eyes and makes you look even more exotic than usual. Judah isn’t going to know what hit him.”
“I’m not trying to impress him. You know I am not interested in dating anyone. I’m doing this strictly as a favor for you. You didn’t give him the impression that I would be interested in him, did you?” she asked me.
“No. I didn’t. He isn’t looking for any kind of romantic involvement either, so you two should get along fine. He just wanted you to come over a little early so that you could meet and at least look like you know each other.”
“Speaking of which, there is the driver now,” I said as I heard the knock on the door.
I went over to open the door and there stood a middle-aged man dressed in a black suit and tie with a chauffeur’s cap on. Parked at the curb I could see a black town car.
“Hey Melanie,” he said. “Sorry you aren’t feeling so hot today.”
“Hey Mike. Good to see you. Looking as sharp as ever.”
“Well, I do try,” he said with a laugh.
“Mike, I want you to meet my cousin Veronica Lewis. Ronnie, this is Mike, Judah’s driver.”
“Nice to meet you Mike,” she said has she extended her hand to shake his.
When Mike was able to get the full effect of Veronica, he was initially speechless. She was captivating and wholesome appearing all at the same time. Melanie had to nudge him to make him aware that Veronica had her hand out to shake his.
He cleared his throat so as to shake himself out of his trance and reached out to shake her hand.
“Nice to meet you as well, Ms. Lewis. I’ll just be out here by the car when you’re ready.”
As Mike turned to walk back to car, our eyes met. We were both thinking the same thing: Judah was definitely in trouble.
