Salvation
Week 1: Day 2
Read John 7:25–44.
Who are the people mentioned in this passage?

How many times does Jesus speak in this passage (red words)? ____________
That’s right. Jesus speaks only three times. Within a passage packed with characters, Jesus does not go on lengthy monologues; He speaks only three times.
What were the people confused about regarding Jesus?

As we can identify from the passage, the people surrounding Jesus were confused over who He really was. Was He just a good man? Was He a magician? Was He a great prophet? Was He really the Messiah? So many propositions. I think this is also true of today. From every avenue and direction, we are bombarded with so many choices. Meditate, chant, be one with the universe, complete these steps to reach peace, and so on. And really the question underlining all of those is, Who do you say Jesus is? Instead of leaving that as a rhetorical question, let us pause here to answer this question and to take it a step further—for your answer to this question will be the most important answer you will ever give.
Who do you say Jesus is?

Who do you describe yourself as?

Let us jump to Matthew 16:13–20.
In this passage, Jesus is talking with the disciples, His most trusted friends and closest companions. He asks them what people are saying about the Son of Man. The disciples shared with Jesus what others thought about Him, but He wanted to know what they came to believe.[1]
Who did others claim Jesus to be?

What is Simon Peter’s response?
________________________________________________________________________________
Simon Peter answered the question by declaring Jesus to be the Son of the Living God! This was quite the revelation, as further down in verse 17, Jesus tells him that his answer was given to him by God the Father, rather than the world around him. Simon Peter unlocked the key of who Jesus is, the Son of the Living God, the Messiah. Simon Peter was one of Jesus’ closest companions. He walked besides Him on long journey’s, he talked with Him, he knew His character. It was over time that Peter and presumably the other disciples came to this conclusion.[2] He did not let the world shape or change that. As Spurgeon said, “Our Lord presupposes that his disciples would not have the same thoughts as ‘men’ had. They would not follow the spirit of the age, and shape their views by those of the ‘cultured’ persons of the period”.[3] Now refer back to your answer. Have you let the world shape your identity of who Jesus is? How is your answer similar or different from that of the disciples?

It is my greatest hope that through this study you come to discover Jesus as more than just a man and a great prophet. I hope you discover Him as He truly is—the living water, Son of God, the Messiah.
