Bearhouse

After a couple of years of letting Bruno know what I wanted and letting me know what he wanted, we became a man and dog team that I doubt has ever been equaled. It would be hard to estimate how much money he saved me in finding cows I could not have found without him. I was breaking lots of horses for other people. At this time I had a big five year old unbroken horse that belonged to Mr. Stud Sturdivant. I had been riding him without any trouble for about two weeks. I was working the night shift and only slept a couple of hours when I got home on Saturday morning. I needed to go cow hunting and decided to go on this horse. We were going down an old log road about three miles from home. I was really relaxed and feeling good because he was riding perfectly. All of a sudden the horse stopped and snorted. It was just a deer stand he had spotted. Riding with a lot of slack in my rein, I barely touched him with my spurs. I don't think I have ever seen a horse at a rodeo buck any higher. This horse turned wrong side out and changed direction three times without going thirty feet either way. It felt like he threw me twenty feet high. While I was in the air, I told the dogs, Bruno and Jezebel, to get him. The horse and two dogs left in a wild run going north, away from home. I started walking and tracking the horse for about two miles when the tracks played out. I was now five miles from home. I decided to start for home. It took me a long time because I was walking in high heel cowboy boots.
