Psalm of Prayer for Intervention
(Psalm of a Virus)
Ruler of the universe, Father to us all,
I come today with questions and concerns.
Our whole world is being disrupted,
By the presence of a tiny bug.
Our lives are being shaken,
We’ve not seen this in our times.
People are in a panic,
Fear is running wild.
Things we have taken for granted,
Things we thought would always be there.
Are being shuttered and closed away,
Every day there are more and more.
Entire countries are begging for help,
Populations are being decimated.
People are filled with fear,
Not knowing what to expect.
Businesses are closing,
People are losing their jobs.
Supplies are being limited,
Hoarding leaves many without.
We are running out of medical supplies,
We have nothing to fight this illness.
We are fighting over who to blame,
Instead of taking precautions.
Children are out of school,
Their parents are distraught.
Suddenly they must take care of their own,
Many don’t know how to manage.
People are taking advantage,
Of others not as strong as they.
Fighting over toilet paper,
While pushing the elderly out of the way.
Selfish, arrogant and rebellious,
Some refuse to follow the precautions.
They put fun and entertainment,
Above anyone else but them.
Each day we hear more bad news,
Every day the death toll rises.
Doctors and nurses are exhausting themselves,
Trying to keep patients alive.
Mankind is showing its true heart,
In acts of selfishness and fear.
Disregarding the danger to others,
In a panic to survive.
Our country has believed we are above this,
We are to smart and advanced.
Nothing can bring us to our knees,
We can defeat anything that comes.
Yet, here we are in this mess,
The economy is crashing.
Maybe we aren’t as smart as we thought,
We are learning an awfully hard lesson.
Our priorities have gotten confused,
Our goals have become polluted.
Society demands our sacrifice,
Of things that are so important.
God, are you teaching us a lesson?
Are You giving us another chance?
One last chance to turn back to You,
In humbleness and repentance?
Are You showing us how arrogant we are?
By allowing us to fail.
Are You waiting to hear us cry to You?
Admitting we are weak and frail.
Are You teaching us that we need You?
As we see so many perish.
When we have nowhere else to go,
You wait patiently to help us.
Are You restoring us to our families?
Giving us a chance to see what is vital?
To teach and play and pray with our children,
To be examples to them.
Dear Father, have mercy on us now,
Take this situation and work it for good.
Let us turn from depending on ourselves,
And admit that You hold the solution.
You have told us You hear our prayers,
That You will protect Your children.
If only we will call on You,
In times of trouble and peril.
You have said that all who are faithful,
Have nothing to fear or dread.
No plague will approach our dwelling,
When we put all our trust in You.
God, You are in control of all things,
All things must bow to You.
Nothing can exist without Your permission,
Please, eradicate this illness.
Take away this danger,
This virus disrupting our lives.
You are our only help and hope,
To make us well again.
We plead for Your mercy and grace,
We cry out for the touch of Your Hand.
Free us from this plague we are in,
And give us all hope again.
