John 5:17-18 Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." For this reason, the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
Jesus was in trouble with the leaders and was almost stoned because He called God His Father. One time, they tried to throw Him off a cliff! To the Jews, Jesus was claiming too close of a relationship with God. However, He told us to pray from that same position—that of a Father and much-loved child. He could have taught us to pray, “O most powerful potentate. We bow in fear before you. How can we serve you? How can we satisfy your great anger towards us? How can we make you pleased with us?” Other people prayed to their gods that way. But no, He said to pray, “Our Father.” That is His heart’s desire.

About the Book
Jesus’ disciples watched Him regularly go away by Himself to pray to His Father. This made such an impression on them that they asked Jesus to teach them to pray. We now know this prayer as “The Lord’s Prayer” or “The Our Father.” A more accurate description would be “The Disciple’s’ Prayer.”
Was Jesus just giving His disciples a specific prayer to recite - a string of unchanging words in an unchanging sequence - or was He giving us a “way” to talk to His Father.

About the Author
Raised in a traditional church, Terry was taught the concept of prayer by reading and reciting other peoples’ prayers, most of which were written a long time ago. These canned prayers left her empty and as “connected” to God as reading a textbook could get her.
After deciding to follow Jesus almost 50 years ago, Terry longed for a closer relationship with God. She realized that prayer should be more than repeating someone else’s words. It should be more than a quick “Thank You, God” or a “I need something, God.” It needed to be more personal. And it needed to be a conversation.
She learned about how important it is to read her Bible, and learned to pray the scriptures. She’d read books on different types of prayer, but still she needed more. And she wanted to “pray right!” Deep inside, Terry knew it was prayer that would draw her closer to the intimate relationship with God that she longed for. This led her to a Biblical study about prayer, with special attention to what Jesus taught His disciples.
Though Terry never dreamed of becoming an author, what she learned about prayer through this study, changed her life. Her hope is that it will change yours, also.
