It seems every Thanksgiving, without fail, me and the sweet potatoes have a little issue. Seriously.
I seem to always inevitably burn the marshmallows and smoke rises from the oven, into the kitchen and sometimes setting off the fire alarm.
My husband likes sweet potatoes one way and one way only. I have tried some amazing recipes, using fresh sweet potatoes, or mashed sweet potatoes in hollowed out oranges; but without fail … no matter how fancy I become, he wants the canned sweet potatoes/yams cooked with butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and then garnished with a thick layer of miniature marshmallows, lightly browned. (not burnt)
This past Thanksgiving, the sweet potatoes and I had our little annual tiff before I could even remove them from the can.
As I was using my hand held can opener to open the first of three large cans, the can opener exploded. Not kidding! It just came apart and parts flew all over the cabinet top.
My husband was standing in the kitchen watching me prepare his favorite dish (he tends to hover when I’m making his favorite dishes, bless his little heart) and he was amazed with the authority the can opener dismantled itself!
Not having another option. I was wondering how I was going to make his sweet potatoes for the big Thanksgiving meal. It is one of the last things I make before everyone arrives, and it was almost time for the shenanigans to begin.
Not giving up, I asked my husband to go into the garage and come back with his hammer and chisel!
Just minutes later, here he comes, proudly having one in each hand. And together we pried open the three large cans of his beloved sweet potatoes.
You know me, I can make almost everything that happens to me a life lesson learned.
So, as we were prying open the cans, I thought…
We should be so determined to claim and receive our blessings from our Heavenly Father.
When our “that was unexpected” moment occurs how do we respond? Do we just give up with an oh me/poor me attitude?
Or do we take matters into our own hands, working hard to receive the outcome we desire? Or do we turn to the Lord with an attitude of humbleness, ready to hear His take on the situation and willingly learn from it?
It is always our choice. It is always up to us how we handle the “that was unexpected” moments of our life.
God doesn’t push Himself on us. He is a gentleman. He gives us free choice.
If the can opener breaks…get the hammer and chisel for goodness sakes!
