Throughout human history people have believed that the power in words was used to create the universe. We might call this the creation account. In the bible, God's first interaction with mankind during the creation, was to give us words of instruction. His instruction was that we were to be creators. Mankind was commanded to, “be fruitful and multiple”. “fill the earth” and to actually rule this planet, not only with the spoken word, but the internal words we speak to ourselves. God began creation with words and we humans were given the creative power in words. However, through the great fall of man, time and error, we have forgotten this power. Mankind, in disobeying God's command, “do not eat” of a certain tree, lost the ability to fellowship with God and in turn, lost the creative power in words as well as many other things. What a terrible, sad, day this was. In fact, I believe that the power of mankind to use and create with words the way we were originally intended to, was lost for ages until a certain man – Jesus came to restore this power to mankind and teach us how to once again use it. Jesus said, “I came so that people would have an abundant life” and this includes the power in the words we use. Thanks to Jesus, we can once again use words in their intended way and recognizing this fact is vital to every aspect of our lives - our health, growth, right relationships, raising successful children; even helping our plants grow! The importance of words can perhaps be illustrated in a bible story. At one point in his life on earth, people who claimed to believe in and follow Jesus began to desert him and leave. Jesus then asked his closest disciples, “are you leaving also?” One of them, named Peter, responded with, “Lord, where will we go – you have the words of eternal life”. Peter was wise enough to recognize what many others did not – the power of the words that Jesus spoke. In fact, the bible tells us that Jesus was the very embodiment of God’s words – “the word became a human and lived among us”. Now that’s power!

About the Author
Jeff Cokenour has worked as a boat scrubber, fry cook, cryptologist, linguist, lumberjack, chef, school teacher, minister, businessman and veterans representative. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy and the Texas State Guard. He managed to graduate from college and makes a mean cup of coffee. Jeff’s leadership roles include youth groups, businesses, churches, corporate discussion groups and teams of all kinds.
Jeff’s travels on behalf of the power in words has taken him to such far-off places as Turkey, Tibet, China, North Korea, Pakistan, Dubai, Germany, the arctic circle and even California. Jeff is a pretty good horse trainer, not a bad painter, can eat 4 bowls of his wife’s shrimp stew and shares God’s love with his family on a homestead in south Texas.
