“The willow tree is directly ahead!” shouted Selah.
“We’ll stop here to swim and rest a bit before moving on.”
Ella was ready for the needed rest. They had been on
the channel for two hours. As she strained to see their
destination and where they would dock their canoe, she
noticed a stir by the back of the willow tree. Was that a
shadow of a man watching her? Watching them? Quickly
the dark figure of the man slipped behind the willow
tree.
“Aiden,” she whispered. “Did you see anything go
behind the willow tree? I mean, did you notice anything?
I think someone is watching us from up there.”
Aiden caught the anxiousness in Ella’s voice and
leaned over the side of the boat shading his eyes to see
the willow tree. Her tone made Aiden’s hair stand up on
the back of his neck and fear gathered in his throat. As
he stretched to see what she was whispering about, the
canoe rolled to the far right, which threw Ella onto the
floor of the canoe.
“Aiden! What is wrong with you? Be careful!” Waving
him off, Ella sighed. “Oh! Just help me dock the boat.”
Trying to make things right with Ella, Aiden sprang into
action. He jumped in the ankle-deep water to dock their
canoe. Ella, however, did not take her eyes off the willow
tree.
Did she imagine the man-like figure?
What…or who.... was watching them?

About the Book
Four teenage friends find the unexpected when they canoe down the channel toward the mouth of Lake Hubbi.
