Love: Agape LOVE
He wrote them to teach his people how to live-how to act in every circumstance, for he wanted them to be understanding, just and fair in everything they did. Proverbs 1:2 TLB
Lady Wisdom asks, “How are you demonstrating your love?”
There is a great reward with agape love…a love that is redeeming and transforming. The characteristic of love in Proverbs is demonstrated by what we do for others. In the month of February, we celebrate Valentine’s Day. We recognize the one that we have romantic attractions for. You may receive a box of chocolates, a card and maybe some jewelry. The person will say, “I love you.” This expression of love makes you feel good inside and you are excited about being appreciated and acknowledged by the person you have the same feelings for. However, is there more to love?
I believe that there is more to love. There are many layers to love. There is the surface love. For example; I love that dress or I love my car. We see the value or emotional appreciation for things. There is a desire to obtain things that give us enjoyment and/or pleasure. So our response is: “I love that!” There is also a love that is directed at self. Most people’s concept of love is self-centered, a love that demands something in return.
There is a higher form of love and it is called agape love. Agape love is unconditional, divine love, which was modeled by Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son…” (John 3:16 KJV) This kind of love transcends our human understanding and requires that we look outside of ourselves and love others.
We have to explore what is true love. Can we find answers in the book of Proverbs concerning this important need of the human experience? I know we can and we are going to ask Lady Wisdom to show us the way to a deeper experience in the understanding of love. In the first chapter of Proverbs the second verse, King Solomon loves his people and wants to see them be successful in life. He performs an unselfish act by asking God for wisdom to be able to lead his people in the ways of wisdom. King Solomon was ready to give agape love despite the sacrifice involved. It is the reasoning, esteeming and making wise decisions type of love that benefits all.
Prayer:
Dear Lord,
Help me to discover agape love. There is a great reward with agape love…a love that is redeeming and transforming. Amen
