Raised With Christ
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
Since Christians have been raised in Christ, they are to focus on the attributes and character of God in heaven, where Christ is seated with Him. Our minds should be filled with the things of heaven. There is an old adage that says do not be too heavenly minded that you are of no earthly good. While the intent of this statement is good (focus on work for Christ here on earth) it is misleading. For Christians, their hearts and minds should be intensely focused on the things of God. In doing so, they should be much more effective here on earth. Christians have a call to seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; then all these things will be added to you. What are the “things” to be added? They are the areas of life that people think about such as food and clothing—the basic needs in life. These items are critical to survival, yet Jesus calls those who follow him to seek him first. The same thing applies in this passage.
Sin abounds in this world and the human mind need protection. An element of this protection is the ability to think on things above—on Christ and His ways. Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the flesh, and those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. This is a critical principle. Do not allow sin or anything that may be unfruitful or in direct conflict with the ways and holiness of God to enter the mind. Remain focused on Christ.
