I swallowed again, my throat suddenly dry. Before I could stop myself, I blurted out, “That’s just it, though. I don’t want to surrender anything to God. I want to have control of my life and do the things that make me happy.” I turned to look at him and his face was lost in the darkness. I continued on, encouraged by the thought that maybe he couldn’t see my face either. “I don’t want a God leading me who only wants me to suffer. I don’t want anything to do with a God who makes empty promises and who won’t provide for his children even when it is within his power to do it!”
“You’ve got the wrong idea about God. What makes you say such things?” He slid his arm from off my shoulders and reached for my hand. I jerked it away, and answered, “Look around you, Nathan! You live in a little building outside of a run-down old castle. Maggie and Frank don’t have any money and there is hardly enough food to go around…and Maggie! She loves God and look what he is doing to her-”
“Carol, stop! Stop now.” Nathan interrupted, his voice stern and clear. I stopped and let him talk. “You are upset, I understand. And yes, when you look at things the way you do, it can look bad. But ask anyone who is a true Christian and they will tell you that God is faithful and loving. Romans says ‘And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.’” He reached for my hand again, and I let him take it. He held it tightly, and continued;
“Things happen to us, good things and sometimes even bad things, but God doesn’t make those things happen to us just to watch us suffer. He is merciful and gracious and loving. He loved us so much that he sent his only son Jesus to die for us. When you accept him into your heart he gives you joy and peace beyond understanding.” He paused and said with resigned purpose; “I do sleep in a little building outside of an old run-down castle, and yes sometimes there is hardly enough food to go around, but have you seen myself or Frank or Maggie depressed? Or weeping with sadness and hopelessness?” He bent his head as if to look into my eyes, asking, “Well, have you?”

About the Book

About the Author
Melissa Whitt spent her childhood traveling from church to church before flying to Costa Rica and then Honduras with her family as missionaries. She and her husband have three children and are actively involved in their church. When she isn’t homeschooling her children, Melissa writes, plays piano, paints, and sings. There Is a Fountain is her debut novel.
