Impossible Made Possible
Journey with me back in time to a place where the God of the impossible would alter the life of another young girl. This story takes us to the hills of lower Galilee some thirteen hundred feet above sea level, to a town known as Nazareth. A young lady by the name of Mary received an unusual visit from an unusual guest. God sent his angel Gabriel to deliver amazing news to Mary. It was just not any news; this was the mother of all news. Mary was the fortunate one. She had been chosen to be the mother of the Messiah, Jesus, the Savior of the world.
Mary was frightened at the sight of the angel, but the angel said, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God." (Luke 1:30 NLT)
After hearing the angel’s words, Mary was confused. The news must have hit her like a tabloid headline. She must have wondered why the angel insisted on calling her “greatly favored”. Feeling a bit distressed by all that was happening before her, she probably had some questions she felt necessary to ask her guest. Everything that the angel said to her, came as a shock, a surprise, and it would have mystified the best of us. When she finally realized what was actually happening, she must have wondered, “Are you sure you got the right address? Is your GPS working properly? You do know that I am a virgin, right?”
I don’t think it was every young lady’s dream to be the mother of the Messiah. Sure, they must have all heard from the religious teachers that sooner or later God would provide them with a liberator. However, since much time had passed from the first mention of the Savior’s coming, most likely many were not even looking for him. News about a Savior was written all over the Torah, including how the Messiah would come from David’s ancestry.
The angel Gabriel brought Mary news of great proportions. He spoke these words as he turned to Mary and said, “You, Mary, will become pregnant and you shall call your child Jesus.”
Mary probably exclaimed to the angel, “That is great news indeed, but, hello? Have you not heard? Do you not realize that although I am engaged, I have not gotten married? This is the reason why I am almost certain that you must surely have the wrong person. Joseph and I have not slept together yet, so you must have mistaken my identity. Maybe your GPS has misled you to the wrong house. Or maybe you read your texts and emails wrong. I am sure that you are aware of my marriage status. You should have checked my Facebook profile before coming here. You see, Gabriel, since I am not married and have not had sex, it is impossible for me to have a child.”
Little did Mary realize that her cousin, who had been unable to have children was now into her sixth month. Yes, Elizabeth, Mary’s cousin, could not have a baby. Elizabeth and her husband had tried and tried again but without success. Finally, they gave up hope of ever having a child. People called Elizabeth “the barren one.” That was her nick name. To be barren in those days was not a good thing. Rumors had it that if a woman was barren it was because God was surely punishing her for her sins. They had no fertility centers in those days, but they did have something that you and I have access to: prayer. Our God loves to answer the call of His children, and there is nothing too difficult for Him. He is the God of the impossible.
Always remember what Luke 1:37 (NKJV) says: “For with God nothing will be impossible.” It does not matter what situation you are facing in life. No matter how difficult it may seem, God will make a way for you. There is nothing too difficult for Him. Look in the mirror, and realize that you are very valuable in God’s sight. You have been brought to this little planet called earth for a reason. God has a great future for you, so do not throw in the towel. Instead, drop to your knees and realize that there is no other God like our God.
