Miracles happen when God steps into a routine situation and makes it extraordinary. Have you wondered about miracles lately? Have you wondered if God is still in the miracle business? Have you been waiting for yours - and waiting and waiting? Have you heard what He’s done in other’s lives and wondered if God truly intervened or if it just happened by chance?
Sometimes our miracle meter is flat, isn’t it? It doesn’t seem to even flicker when we see things that are amazing. Well, today, we are going to relook at some of the miracles recorded in God’s Word and look at what He’s doing in others around us – ordinary people like you and me for whom God stepped in and performed the impossible. Miracles are moments of the miraculous waiting to happen. Paul explains to the Corinthians: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him” [1 Corinthians 2:9].In this chapter, we are going to look at just two of the physical miracles that Jesus accomplished. Jesus had just come down from the mountainside when a man riddled with leprosy stepped up to him and fell to his knees before him. “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean” [Matthew 8]. Without hesitation, not repulsed by the horrid sores covering the man’s body, Jesus reached out and touched the desperate man kneeling before him. This might have been the first human touch the man had received in years. You see in Jesus time when a person contracted leprosy they had to leave their family, friends, community and seclude themselves with others who had also contracted the disease. Wherever they went, they had to call out “Unclean! Unclean!” to warn anyone coming close of their hideous illness and warn them away in order to protect others from potential infection. It was a lonely life of isolation and ostracism.
Thus when Jesus reached out to that man He was showing him that he mattered. He was providing him with the healing touch. Medical studies have shown significant improvement in pain, anxiety and even the healing of wounds through the miracle of touch. Others have shown benefit in those suffering from fractures and arthritis, while still others are even looking at how it may positively affect those with cancer. Jesus, our Great Physician, knows the power of touch and so He reached out and touched this man who had been ravaged emotionally and physically by this incurable disease. But that wasn’t all.
