The Holy Spirit is one of the three persons of the one triune God of Scripture, along with the Father and the Son, is the tremendously repelling, yet fascinating and attracting, dimension of the divine. That He is such a Person is not a point established within the Old Testament alone; consequently, some interpreters do not see the Spirit as a “personality” in the way those who embrace the full counsel of Scripture would perceive Him. Only in light of Jesus’ teaching, the experience of Pentecost, and the subsequent New Testament writings does the revelation of such a truth become clear.
The Spirit communicates to humans the benefits of God’s redemptive activity, which is evidenced in the Holy Spirit’s work and purpose in the life of every believer in Jesus Christ.
The tremendous repelling, yet fascinating and attracting, dimension of the divine is thought by many to be one of the most elusive themes in the Bible. The actual designation of Holy Spirit (Hebrew, ruah qados; Greek, pneuma hagion) is found in only a few, late, pre-Christian Old Testament texts (Isaiah 63:10–11; Psalms 51:11; Matthew 13).
The very word “spirit” conveys the intangibility and incorpreality, thus the non-material. The Spirit is not something one can physically touch, smell, or taste. It is without physical substance, yet it represents the essential reality of human existence. The Spirit cannot be located, weighed, or dissected as a material object. The Spirit is sometimes contrasted with the flesh like the prophet Isaiah declared: “Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the Lord shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down, and they all shall fail together” (Isaiah 31:3). The “Spirit” is not flesh; the “Spirit” is God.

About the Book
The Spirit of Christ is the third person of the Trinity, having the same essence of deity as Jesus and as perfectly one with him as he is with the Father and helper—one literally called alongside to help, to encourage, and to exhort. Jesus says this comforter will take up residence in the believer. The title Spirit of Truth means that the Spirit is the source of truth and communicates the truth to his own.
(John 14:26, 16:12–15).
Apart from him, men cannot know God’s truth.
(1 Corinthians 2:12–16; 1 John 2:20, 27).
About the Author
Tommy Griffin serves as the senior pastor of Northside Chapel in Bay City, Texas. He also serves as the presbyter for Church of God of Prophecy in the mid-south region of Texas. Dr. Griffin also serves as a chaplain for the Bay City Police Department and on the Chaplaincy staff of Matagorda Regional Medical Center.
