About the Book

It is Ayana’s first day at school. She is very excited and is looking forward to making new friends. But when she notices that the other girls do not look the same as her, she begins to worry. Ayana’s skin and eyes are brown, but other girls have blonde hair and blue eyes. Their hairstyles are different too. Ayana suddenly feels shy and anxious. Will anyone want to be her friend now? That night, God sends Ayana a special dream with an important message.

About the Author

Bintou Ndri is from the Ivory Coast. As a mother of two girls (aged two and four), she is passionate about creating positive role models for African American girls and challenging the distorted media images they are so often exposed to. She recalls growing up feeling self-conscious about her African heritage and recognises that skin tone and African features are still an issue with many people within the African community. She has written this book to help young girls realise that they do not need to feel pressurized to look like someone else. Bintou’s faith has taught her to appreciate how God has made her and be thankful to Him for her heritage. She wishes to share her Christian faith through this book and inspire other parents to do the same with their own children.

She also has a keen interest in issues relating to health and social disparities in the US. This has led her to support organizations seeking to decrease infant mortality rates in the African American community, including ROSE (Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere) and ROBE (Reaching Our Brother Everywhere).
