When He was on trial for so-called crimes, Jesus told Pilate, “In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.” In turn, Pilate asked, “What is truth?” (John 18:37-38).
In how many areas of our lives do we face the same question – what is truth? Shucks, I’m not even sure I’m getting the truth when I check online reviews of products I want to buy. We all know we can’t really trust them – don’t we? I mean how many of the reviews were simply salted in by the seller or manufacturer? Frankly, you and I both know that we don’t get the straight scoop from politicians, or from major corporations, or from the television ads. I mean you name it, and we truly live lives that are devoid of real truth. An old TV show – the X-Files – made the statement – the truth is out there.
In a much deeper sense, I think Pilate was on point with his question – what is truth? I mean, aren’t there entire life philosophies built around the long, sought-after truth? Isn’t the greatest unanswered question “What is the meaning of life?” And it isn’t some conspiracy about alien life or Area 51 that we seek. It goes much deeper than that. It goes to the very heart of who we are and what we’re doing here.
They say the best lies contain some elements of truth and the secret is to figure out how much is the lie and how much is the truth.
What if there is an ultimate truth? Wouldn’t you want to know? I mean, wouldn’t you need to know? I would. I did. I had this inner desire to know the truth. It all had to be about more than what we had here on earth. There was more to it than that. And if there really was a deeper truth, I knew it would give meaning to my life, to my very existence.
What if you could find that truth? What would you do? What would it be worth to you to know—I mean, deep in your heart, at the very fiber of you’re being—know that you had found the truth, and wonder of wonders, it didn’t cost a dime? Yet, it would be life transforming. Satisfying. Bringing a peace to your existence you never knew existed or dreamt could be yours.
