“Rachel! How’s my favorite missionary today?” He got up and shook her hand warmly and led her to the “company” chair across from his desk.
“Fine, Preach but I needed to talk with you. That is, if you can spare a few minutes?”
“I can spare all the time you need.” Adrian sank back into his chair and waited for her to speak.
She just sat for a moment, her face suddenly serious and her eyes very sad.
He felt a prickle of alarm but was not prepared for her next words.
“I have AIDS.”
The words lay there between them. Harsh, frightening, unbelievable words. He wished that he could erase them. Make them non-existent. Make them go away. But they were still there and he realized he hadn’t responded.
He cleared his throat but all that came out was a strange grunt. He tried again, feeling ashamed and embarrassed.
“Oh Rachel, I am so sorry.” He finally got the words out but how inadequate they were.
