Samuel’s Whistle

The day began bright and sunny. Some of the coolness of the past night was still in the air. It was 7 a.m., and already the kitchen in the main house of the large plantation was bustling. Breakfast was soon to be served, and preparing it was hard work for Samuel's mother and grandmother... Every morning Samuel sat outside the back steps of the outdoor kitchen. As he sat there, he practiced whistling...While he whistled, every so often, his mother would say, "Samuel, that was great!" For you see, whistling was a part of young Samuel's work.
