The Bible doesn’t tell us what angels look like nor does it tell us their names except for a few, like Gabriel and Michael. It does, however, tell us that God sends heavenly angels to guard and guide us in many ways. Unlike fallen angels, heavenly angels lead us to good, positive thoughts. Negative, depressing, or hopeless thoughts are never from God’s angels.
We can’t see our thoughts; they are invisible. Angels, like thoughts, are also invisible. Only when it’s essential (necessary) will God allow someone to see an angel. The Bible describes two ways in which His angels have appeared: to look like a person or as a vision in a dream.
Let’s read about several angelic appearances recorded in the Bible. Look up the following Scriptures, and note which angels appeared physically as people and which appeared as visions in dreams.
Matthew 1:18-20, 2:13, 2:19-20
Luke 1:26-35, 2:9-15
Acts 5:18-19, 12:7, 16:9
Although most of us will never see an angel, they reach us in many ways. They whisper to us through our thoughts. They touch us by helping us to feel safe. They warn us of danger by sending us uneasy or odd feelings.
Can you think of a time when an angel may have spoken to you? Did you listen? When we receive messages or help from one of God’s angels, it’s always for the good of all concerned. This means a heavenly angel would never hurt another one of God’s children to help us. His angels must do what is best for everyone. God instructs angels to guide us in good, positive ways that please Him.
Angels are not here to shower us with material wealth (toys, gifts, or money). Instead, they help us create goodness and joy from the gifts God has given us. God has blessed each of us with special talents and spiritual gifts so that we can shine and contribute in our own individual ways. He asks us not to compare ourselves to others but to appreciate and use the gifts we have been given to help others.
… each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. –1 Corinthians 7:7
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights … –James 1:17
Even though it’s a choice, God expects us to use the gifts He’s given us to do good, righteous things and help others. His Will (plan) is perfect, and He accomplishes great things through us when we choose to follow Him and use our gifts for His purpose.

Pamela Joy is a former teacher with a BFA from Ohio University and MA from The Ohio State University. She has been published in the Lutheran Journal and numerous Christian magazines for children. Messages from Heaven is the second edition of her first book that was published in 1997. Her second book, Cleon the Crooked Tree, was published in 2011 and is also aimed at spiritual growth for our youth.
