The first 14 verses of chapter 6 lay out for the believer how grace works in him to enable the believer to live a life separated from sin unto God. These verses comprise the simple and basic doctrine that enables the believer to live a life free from the dominion and the tyranny of the sin nature. That freedom comes by faith in the operation of God in baptizing the believer into Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. That baptism (which the Holy Spirit performs in the believer at the moment when a lost sinner gets saved), joins the believer to Jesus Christ and indeed places him or her into an eternal living relationship with Christ. In that baptism, the believer is so joined of Christ as to be a member of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones much like how a man and a woman are joined in marriage (Ephesians 5:30). The point to note though is that when he receives us as a member of His body, he received our sin so as that it (our sin) actually became His in that what was ours became his. He then, as having acquired our sin and our guilt by virtue of this baptism, could now pay the debt for our sin. This He did on the cross of Calvary. This baptism is referenced in Colossians 2:12 where we see that this baptism is “the operation of God.” In 1Cor. 12:13 we see that the Holy Spirit performs this baptism. But here in Romans 6 we see that this baptism has results that go beyond simply transferring our sin and guilt to the Savior so that He could pay its debt. As a result of this baptism our old man (i.e. our souls under the rule of our sin nature) has been crucified with Christ so that we need not obey it anymore (verse 6). The end result is that we “...are dead to sin” (verse 2). Paul therefore asks (and answers) the rhetorical question of verse 1.

About the Author
Michael J. Tiry came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at the age of twenty-nine. His deep appreciation for having the assurance of eternal life, his passion for study, and his quest for truth compelled him to search deeply into the Bible with a desire to learn its truth that he might present the riches of God’s grace to others. Over the last forty years Michael has been involved in itinerate preaching, a church planting ministry, and a teaching and preaching ministry at Berean Bible Church in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; Michael also serves Berean Bible Church as director of the Timothy Institute, designed to prepare men for leadership in local churches. Additionally, Mike has been active over the last fourteen years in a prison ministry. Michael and his wife of forty years, Linda, have raised five daughters.
