My first knowledge of God was the infallible fact that God is our Creator and our Father. I owe this solely to the loving care of my mother who taught me both the lyrics and the mime of a song that I still sing today. I can still vividly remember my mom singing this beautiful chorus to me as a child. The lyrics of the chorus were made up of questions like “Who made the rolling sea?,” “Who made the twinkling stars?,” “Who made the birds that fly?,” and “Who made you and I?”
The answer to those questions was always given in a resounding shout of confidence and gladness with my hands stretching toward the heavens and my eyes fixed on the sky—our Father God!
It is not by chance either that the first Bible verse I was taught by Mom happens to be the first verse of the Bible: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Therefore, when I was asked who God is, I always said, “God is our Creator and our Father.” Today, should you ask me who God is, I still proclaim him to be our Creator and our Father!
God Our Creator
We get a very remarkable and impressive account of God’s amazing power in Genesis 1. By his unfathomable power and his spoken word, God created this entire world. Many years after the world was created, John, the apostle of Jesus Christ, affirmed God to be our Creator as well when he declared, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).
Yes, God is our Creator. Despite the assertions of evolution and the big bang theory that many scholars, professors, and scientists are suggesting, the world was made unquestionably and undeniably by God. “By him all things were made and without him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:3).
God made the wind, water, and gravity and every substance, atom, and element that makes up the world. In these times, we cannot afford to live in the world and deny the one who made the world. “He was in the world and the world was made by him and the world knew him not” (John 1:10). How detrimental! Instead of denying him and disputing his handiwork, we ought to be giving glory and praise unto him for his excellence, wisdom, and power for creating such a masterpiece that we all enjoy and live in. What a mighty God we serve! There is none like him and none to be compared to him.
The account in Genesis 1 did not reveal any formula, recipe, plan, or measurement; it revealed the all-powerful God, the omnipotent God doing what is impossible to humans. If humans were able to recreate the world, they would have, but God did not leave humans with any prototype to follow. He simply said “let there be,” and there was. How incomprehensible our God is! Scientists cannot begin to decipher his great powers. In fact, he is unstoppable. God will continue to awe the hearts of humankind.
Just think about the enormity of the universe, the depths of the sea, and all the wonderful and amazing creatures that can be found therein. Think about the seasons, whether it be summer, autumn, winter, and spring, or, as we say on our island, the dry season and the rainy season.
The sun in all its splendor gives off just enough heat. The rain bursts through the clouds and knows when it is time to stop. The sea knows its boundaries and just how far on land it can stretch.
The psalmist David exclaimed that “the Heavens declares the glory of God and the firmament show His handy works. Day unto day utters speech and night unto night show knowledge” (Psalm 19:1–2). Each time I look up at the vast starry sky on a moonlit night; each time I look across the ocean decorated by the beautiful and exotic islands in my region of the world; each time I take a walk along the mountain trails and hear the chirping of birds and see the wide variety of animals, including snakes, which I prefer not to see; each time I go snorkeling in the warm waters and take in the view of the corals and the wide variety of fish, I know that God made them all, for he is omnipotent—he is all powerful. He is not bound by physical limitations like humankind is. He is in total control. His power is infinite and limitless, hence why he was able to say “let there be” and there was. How splendid! How awesome! How majestic! How amazing that everything in the world falls into place by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. I like what David said: “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it” (Psalm 39:6). Whom I know God to be, he is in fact so much more. He surpasses all imagination and understanding. I am strongly convinced that our knowledge of God is just a minute fraction of who God really is. God is who he said he is, the Alpha and the Omega. There is no turning with him. He is unchangeable, and therefore we can trust him because he is the same God today as when he created the world. Jeremiah proclaims it well: “Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee” (Jeremiah 32:17). Get it? There is nothing too hard for God to do. In other words, nothing is impossible with God. I believe this with all my heart. Do you? Is there a situation in your life that seems really difficult, and you have no idea how you are going to get out of it? I’ve got great news: God can get you out of it. There is absolutely nothing too hard for him to handle. Remember he is our Creator. Paul states, “He is before all things, and in him all things consist” (Colossians 1:17). All things hold together in him, which includes you and me and your circumstances.
“He’s got the whole world in his hands.” Each time I sang or heard that chorus, I would imagine what enormous hands God must have to hold the whole world. To my amazement, it was not just I who thought that God had really huge body parts, for one night while tucking my five-year-old twin girls into bed, one of them said, “I know something really incredible about God. Mummy, can I tell you?”
“What is it?” I eagerly asked.
“Well, God has the biggest eyes ever.”
