Drawing from the Wells of Salvation

I was standing at the edge of my father’s blueberry field overlooking the scene extending far and away before me almost to the horizon, it seemed, it was so vast.
Of course, it really wasn’t that big, but large enough to transport me from a world of mediocrity to a world of fruitfulness.
I recognized it as my father’s field at the very height of blueberry season, completely filled with luscious deep purple berries. So much so that it was hard to imagine how another single berry could be squeezed onto one slender stalk.
Yet here they were, all the stalks on all the shrubs, thousands upon thousands of them, bent under the weight of the berries waiting to be picked.
It was my father’s field, and yet it wasn’t. It was a picture in my mind, another one of those vivid images the Holy Spirit is so fond of putting there, all containing a message if I cared enough to dig deeper to discover its meaning.
“Do you know why I have brought you here?” The voice sounded dear and very familiar.
Sure enough, when I looked to my left where Artie’s Road fronted the blueberry field and curved downhill from there to the main road, standing only a foot or two away from me was my Lord.
He had been standing there all along, but my eyes were so rapt with the sight of the field in its blaze of purple glory, that I quite forgot about anything else.
“I was just following You, walking close behind You!” I stammered. “How did You get here?” Then apologetically, “I mean, how did I miss seeing You here beside me?”
“Because your focus was on finding the place of fruitfulness where you have always longed to be,” He said quietly. “And so, we are here. This is the place of fruitfulness.”
“Look down at your feet,” He said. This time it was a command. Not a loud one, but a command nevertheless.
I looked.
“What do you see?” He asked.
“I see that my feet are standing just at the edge of the field, but not in it.”
“Exactly. This is the place to which I have brought you. You are standing at the edge of your future which you long to be fruitful, yet you haven’t stepped into it. Why do you think that is?”
“Because I haven’t been willing to leave what is familiar behind to take the first step?” I ventured.
I could see a smile of approval forming on His face.
“And what is it you think you need to leave behind in order to step into the field and become fruitful?” His gaze was serious now. Intent and searching.
“My fear of failure,” I suppose, I said hesitantly. “My fear of leaving what is comfortable, what has always been, all that has gone before, to gain that which is more fulfilling.”
I could see that he was pleased. I was learning.
“And what would you define as being fruitful? In YOUR life, not someone else’s?”
Now His eyes pierced, deep into my soul.
I had to think about that. What DID I consider being fruitful?
“To see all my loved ones not only in love with You, but serving You wholeheartedly, discovering the joys I have known in closely following You. That would be number 1.”
“And number 2?” He seemed genuinely curious.
“To see these writings You have given me this past few weeks used for Your glory, to advance Your Kingdom. To make a real difference in people’s lives. To bring healing where healing is needed. To unlock riddles of confusion which keep people in bondage and cause carelessness and ease in Zion. To bless people. To awaken something within that has been lost, perhaps, for a very long time, just as they have done for me in writing them.”
“Then so shall it be,” He said. “So shall it be.”
