About the Book

In her book, The Minor Prophets: Who Are They? author Bev Scanlon introduces readers to some important people from the Bible. The Minor Prophets all have relevant, important messages from God.

Jonah was sent to Nineveh, Assyria, to tell them of the pending destruction of their city because of their sinfulness. While we think of Jonah inside the whale—it was not a whale—Jonah’s story is really about his disobedience, his pouting, and God’s compassionate heart. Nahum was sent back to Nineveh—a country of people he didn’t know—to give them the same message Jonah had delivered a hundred years earlier. It is a story of forgetfulness of right actions and slipping back into disobedience. Obadiah’s story is based on a rich history lesson of Esau and Jacob that makes clear the vision he had from God. He was sent to Edom with the same message as Jonah and Nahum delivered to Nineveh—the sinfulness and wickedness had to end.

The Minor Prophets: Who Are They? show you these prophets are “minor” only because their books in the Bible are some of the shortest. But their stories and messages are retold in other books of the Bible. God’s compassionate heart, forgiveness, and love for His people are major themes of each story. Reading them shows how God’s work relates to our everyday lives.

About the Author

Bev Scanlon began writing because she found Bible references sometimes challenging to young students in her church classes. When researching ways to help, she was taken by the meaning of Nahum’s name—Comforter—and felt called to tell the story of all the minor prophets from a perspective children can easily understand. Her hope is to help young readers understand God’s love, compassion, forgiveness, and steadfastness through her writing.
