A Certain Glory
(An Allegory regarding the Lusting after the Things of This World)
If I were to tell you that there is a certain glory in having little or nothing that this world offers, you would think that I have lost my ever-lovin’ mind. This is something that everyone needs to learn for themselves. Few people, however, elect to forsake the many treasures of this life on planet Earth. Instead, most everyone would rather horde all the possessions, which are of this world, that they can.
I see many varied and unusual items with hearts stamped on them. I see houses, furniture, automobiles, TV sets, cell phones, computers, jewelry, clothes, many appliances, trinkets, games, and toys, plus a host of other things. All these possessions and more have those hearts imprinted on them. These are the hearts of the selfish and greedy people who think they have to own all of these objects. It shocked me when I saw the movers come and take all such pricy possessions away from many individual households. Those who had the most belongings suffered intensely. I could see their tears and hear the deafening groans of deep anguish. It was a time of reckoning for sure.
After all of this took place, I looked and saw a family that had very little. They lived in a meager home with only a few necessities. When their belongings were taken away, they didn’t even care. They had learned that it was of a much greater importance to keep their wants and desires under control than to attach themselves to temporary possessions. So, when their worldly possessions were snatched away, their hearts did not go with them.
Quickly, the splendor of wealth and affluence on earth had abruptly ended. Many of the rich and well-to-do, who had given their hearts over to many types of luxury items, were left void and empty. This is why I said there is a certain glory in having nothing.
Psalm 39:6
Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely, they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.
Psalm 62:10
Trust not in oppression and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.
Proverbs 13:7
There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.
Proverbs 23:4–5
Labor not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
Matthew 6:19–21
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Luke 12:33–34
Sell that ye have and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
James 5:1–3
Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.
