Then, she listened to the silence of His answers. One night in late Spring, she was about to close her bedroom’s window when they wind danced through the pages of her Bible. When she was going to close it, her eyes landed on Mathew 5:31-32. Her prayers had been answered. She had received an answer: not from her pastor, not from her family or friends, but from the book that she valued and respected with all her heart. With all her soul. With all her understanding. She understood the message, and began to pray in another way and for other reasons. She enlisted the help of her Third Friend. “That friend” who was always present, ready and available for her. The friend who was always in the company of the Father and the Son. She started to pray for strength, and for clarity of mind. She started to ask for the courage to live one day at time putting God first, while developing a plan for her and her children. A plan that did not include her husband. A plan that was not secret. Ruth never liked secrets, unless they were about surprising her children for their birthdays.
Ruth knew that, at a certain point in her journey with her husband, she did not have options but to keep fighting for her marriage: imperfect as it was, shaky, unpredictable, it has her marriage and her marriage only. Now, it has become the single biggest source of agony and pain at this point in her life, but it was still hers. Other things in life were the result of other decisions, pressured at times to please others. Not her marriage. She had chosen something for herself and by herself. She has chosen to put all her eggs in one basket by being united in holy matrimony to a man that she loved, admired, respected and trusted. But that was there and then. The reality of Ruth’s marriage was as real and clear as a bright sunny morning. There was no escaping, no denying it: her marriage was not working. Mistrust, anger and fear were new companions in her life, and she knew it. She also knew she could not dwell on the negative emotions that threatened to invade her life.
On the first week of summer, she armed herself with strength and she told him. The sacred covenant had been disrespected and violated. It had to end.

About the Author
Juan Manuel Benjamin is a Puerto Rican born writer who has been serving in the United States Army for over 29 years. He has utilized his writing skills as a translator and communicator for the Department of Defense, and for various nonprofit organizations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the first place winner in the 2015 Saint Leo University’s Core Values Essay Competition. Mr. Benjamin holds a Master’s Degree in Broadcasting, Telecommunications and Mass Media from Temple University and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Saint Leo University. He and his daughters, Emely and Fiorella Isabel live in Florida.
