“Not this year, Bingham.” Johnny Vitucci says as he pulls on the back of my shirt
and drops me to the ground like a sack of potatoes. I'm now face down in the grass as
the entire school stampedes over me. You have got to be kidding me. Vitucci! He’ll be
sorry!
I feel like I'm in Spain -- like I'm running with the bulls. Knees, elbows, feet
everywhere. Everything but the horns. I'm getting crushed! It kind of reminds me of
football, but one thing is missing… my helmet!
When I finally stop rolling, my eyes go to the other side of the track where
the leaders already are. And who is in the lead? You guessed it. She is. This
cannot be happening.
Adrenaline is a weird thing. They say old ladies have been known to lift cars off
of people when their adrenaline kicked-in. Well, mine is at full throttle, trust me.
I pop to my feet and start in pursuit. All the planning I had done in terms of
my pacing is out the window. This will be a full sprint now. A long, long sprint.
Across the track I can see Abby still in the lead. TJ, DJ, Cho, Chase and Mark
are all right on her pink heels.
One lap quickly turns to five and then six. On lap seven I start to get the
sense that I am in dire straits. While I have closed the gap significantly, there is just
no way I can catch them.
I need a Field Day miracle.
And then it happens.
