We are the Storytellers
#IKnowHim is a call to action. It is a charge to those who have experienced God to go to war on darkness by saying no to fear and boldly sharing their story. This charge is not to draw attention to the story teller, but to the author of the story. To proclaim God’s goodness to all people and to remind Satan that he is not the one who writes our stories. God has already written the end to Satan’s story, and our testimonies remind him that his time here is short. God is on the move and with every second that passes, every wonder and miracle passed on from one generation to the next, every story of every person set free by Christ that travels from one person to the next, the enemy grows weaker and weaker, closer still to his final defeat.
In Revelation 12:11-12 (NIV) we see both of these forces (our testimonies and the enemy) in action: “And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” Our debt was paid by the blood of the Lamb and Satan cannot stand it. Satan’s aim is to deceive as many people as he can about who Jesus really is and their need for Him. Satan’s ultimate goal is to prevent as many people as he can from establishing a relationship with God that will allow them to enter the gates of heaven, and he will accomplish this by whatever means possible.
While evidence of God on the move is abundant, so is the work of the devil. He knows his time is coming to an end, so he toils all the more to keep those who believe silent while he wreaks havoc on the earth. The light that we carry if we bear the name of Jesus has the ability to drive out any darkness that we encounter. When we share the Gospel of Christ by vulnerably sharing our story, we add yet another torch to the flame of the body of Christ. Collectively, our flame grows brighter as we share what God has done in our lives, and the devil trembles. Our flames grow stronger each time someone boldly faces the darkness and, even in the midst of immense turmoil, they proclaim that God is real, God is here, and He is good the enemy flees. Every time a believer uses their testimony to encourage those who follow Jesus and to inspire those who have not yet believed to simply lift up their eyes and see God moving, Satan’s sure defeat is closer still.
In his book The Pursuit of God, author A.W. Tozer writes, “…if my fire is not large it is yet real, and there may be those who can light their candle at its flame.” This is the ultimate goal of living a life for Jesus: that by our testimony others might pursue Christ and salvation, ultimately bringing glory to Him that all glory is due. The purpose of telling stories about God on the move is to bring glory to God for doing incredible things in our lives despite our weakness. All throughout scripture God encourages us to tell of the wonders He has done for us. To tell our families, our city, our friends, everyone who hasn't yet heard how He stepped down from Heaven yet again to dwell in our midst.
Of this The Psalmist writes, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.” (Psalm 22:22, ESV) We tell our brothers and sisters the power that the name of Jesus has displayed in our lives to encourage them to look for it in their own lives as well. We sing songs about God doing incredible things to inspire the body to keep their eyes lifted to Christ who is the mountain mover, the chain breaker, and the freedom fighter. Likewise in Psalm 66:16 (ESV) we read, “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul.” Everyone loves inspiring stories, those that end happily, but think for a moment about those stories that do not end well. Now imagine someone who loves Jesus more than anything, sharing a story of unimaginable heartbreak and going on to say, “Now let me tell you what God has done for my soul through it all.” If someone can survive being cast down in ultimate despair and stand to say that God is STILL good, there is obvious power in their anchor of hope.
What this can mean to someone in the trenches of heartache, stuck in the dire mess of their lives, is that there is One who moves on behalf of the hurting. There is One who refuses to sit idly by and watch those He loves suffer. It does not mean our circumstances will change overnight or maybe even ever, but it does mean that He has the power to do incredible things for our souls that will never pass away
