A Reflection of “Beautifully Naked” by Marisol Martinez Every now and again, I come across a devotional book that, I feel, has the capability of enabling it’s reader like the author hopes it will do. These finds are, truly, rare, but they’re out there. The purest gems are the ones that make us forget we’re even reading a devotional at all... The ones that cause us to think we’re, more so, in conversation with a good friend over a warm cup of coffee, tea, cider, etc. Just like you don’t want those conversations to end, I suspect the readers greatest challenges in reading this book will be when, or even how, to ever say “goodbye” long enough to take a break from it! That said, Marisol Martinez’s masterful offering of “Beautifully Naked” is one of the most well organized, and intricately detailed, Christian devotionals I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. For most people, it can be read in one sitting. It’s packed with Bible study exercises, suggested Biblical reading, intriguing side stories, and supporting Biblical passages throughout. Moreover, Martinez’s well-constructed exposition adds a sense of authenticity that, I feel, is often lacking in these sort of works. Throughout the book, she advocates for women to seek God’s eternal approval above all others. By representing God as lights to the world, she acknowledges that women can evolve into someone that’s, truly, beautiful. Her scriptural integrations of the correlating Biblical passages (regarding God’s perception of beauty) are a welcomed feature because of how they fit the expanding commentary. Martinez does a fantastic job of encouraging women to think of themselves as treasured gifts to men from God. She maintains that women are so much more than aesthetically pleasing objects of affection, and that they should not see themselves as any less valuable than men. Therefore, she warns women of the dangers of being involved with selfish, worldly, men who attempt to discredit the sacredness of their love offerings. Such men, she recognizes, will try to persuade women to engage in sexual acts that are unacceptable outside of the confines of marriage. Her words, encouragingly, request that women set out on a journey to uncover the truth for their missions in life. She addresses the need to look beyond the cultural ideologies that only serve to stifle spiritual progress. In doing so, Martinez advocates that women should strive, most, to make themselves beautiful in the eyes of the Lord. Additionally, the metaphor in which she titled the book “Beautifully Naked” conveys how people should avoid being sinful, that way we can avoid feeling inadequate and ashamed as Adam and Eve did in the Garden of Eden, after the initial sin. She asserts that we are to be a sort of blank canvas for God. Furthermore, her promotions of celibacy and atonement are prominently featured because of the sacredness in which God views sexual intimacy. The author scripturally supports these point as good, if not better, than any of the preceding devotionals I’ve read. Martinez leads the reader through a step-by-step beauty reemergence process. Her suggestions are geared toward awaking the woman’s individual self worth through the stimulation of affirmative metaphysical meditations on scriptures. Consequently, in doing so, she asserts how the daily end results should be to separate oneself from the culturally specific notions of what being a “beautiful” woman really is all about. An intriguing note is how the author feels, through a closer walk with Jesus, the right mate will, eventually, surface. Her supposition being that the right mate will be guided to the woman’s light from within, and, therein, be attracted to the true beauty that sets her apart from all others. Moreover, her stance on how women should take great joy in striving to preserve themselves for their husband to be is an inspiring thought to the Christian male reader in search of true love. I feel that Martinez's warmth emanates greatly from her aspirations for the reader to think of how to honor God in each new moment. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in her inclination to include a plethora of real life examples of women, and men, who are utilizing the gifts they’ve been given. The stories she's included are, equally, entertaining, as well as excellent precautionary tales. Furthermore, each story is validated through the authors thoughtful inclusion of supporting Biblical scriptures. Although the target audience for this devotional is, clearly, women, it doesn’t mean that a male audience can’t, also, be greatly impacted. In fact, I’ve found this book to be a viable resource in doing just that. Surely, it will only help to know the struggles women face regarding cultural expectations, and how to locate the right Christian mate for them. Thus, in my opinion, any scripturally adherent man of God will, equally, benefit from reading, rereading, and participating in the chapter exercises included in this book.
