All I Wanted Was a Puppy

Carolynn began gathering up her things when she paused and said, “Gentlemen, I feel fairly certain that Charles already knows this, so it will be old information to him. I have a degree in criminal justice and worked as a policewoman for a few years while working on advanced degrees that has brought me to your fair city. I understand your jobs. I have a concealed carry license. I was competitive and proficient with my weapon. Which brings me to the point of me asking you, where is a good range for target practice? I would like to maintain my proficiency. I might need it.”
Herman asked, “Are you carrying now?”
She said, “Yes,” and handed him her license to carry.
He said, “Wearing or carrying?”
She said, “Wearing. Did you detect my weapon or weapons when I walked in? Some really weird things have been happening, including the ‘flat tire’. Considering things that have been occurring, I prefer not going into that empty house, alone and not be prepared!” He nodded in the affirmative. She continued, “Another thing, if you drive by my house at night and the porch light is not burning and a light is not on in the house, please stop and check on me. Something is weird going on. I had been suspicious that someone had been in my house. Now I know for sure, because someone was in my house while I was at work.” The four men looked curiously, one to the other. “I am so thankful that I had a chance to meet you three law officials tonight. And for this reason, I want all three law enforcement agencies to hear what I have told you tonight. Something screwy is going on and I intend to be prepared.” Charles’ face turned stone white and rigid at this last statement.
She asked Charles a hard question, “Was your wife’s car accident an accident or was there suspicious activities involved in it?”
Tight lipped, Charles said, “We cannot discuss that now nor in this place. I can only say it is still under investigation. And, I knew about your degree in criminal justice as well as your police work when we agreed for you to help with my children. There was a reason that was important but I could not tell you about it then.”
She said with intensity, “Because of these happenings, Charles I think it is in the best interest of your children that you move ahead quickly in hiring a full-time nanny. For one thing, the ‘flat tire’ was a cut tire that caused the blow out. But, I am sure you all know that, as do I. Another thing Charles, have you had my house bugged? If these are your dogs, call them off!”
