At this point everything changed. Every aspect of God’s creation was affected. The Bible says that as soon as they ate the fruit, they knew they were naked. Now that’s interesting because we know Adam and Eve were naked before they ate the fruit, as we just read in Genesis 2:25. However, something had to change because now they recognized and acknowledged their nakedness so much so, that they felt they needed to cover themselves. They did not recognize or have an understanding of their nakedness, as being something that needed covering before they ate the fruit. The only explanation is that they did have a covering before they ate the fruit. Now it wasn’t the type of covering like clothes that we would think of having today. They were covered in the Glory, the Honor, and the Presence of God Himself! It was an actual covering they experienced and carried. It clothed them. It was glory upon them. It was honor that covered them. It was the presence of their creator that clothed them. God said they were created in His image. He is Light! He is Love! He is glorious, radiant and majestic. There was a brilliant and glorious splendor that covered their bodies. That is why Adam and Eve did not realize they were naked before they ate of the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The glory that God had given them covered their nakedness.
Now this glory, this honor, this presence that covered Adam and Eve was not only to clothe them, but it was much more than that. Their glorious covering gave them an appropriate view of the life God had given them. It was an accurate way of looking at themselves and their life. It was the viewpoint of God Himself. We can say that Adam and Eve were seeing through God’s eyes. Remember we just read that each time God created something He saw that it was good and He approved it! Their eyes saw the way God saw. They were seeing correctly because they were seeing God’s perspective. They were seeing the way God sees.
However, when Adam and Eve ate the fruit, their eyes were opened to a different reality. Their view point changed. Their entire perspective changed. Their perceptive of life as they had always known it suddenly changed. And because their perspective changed, they began to experience emotions they had never experienced before as we find in the following verses.
They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
Genesis 3:8-11 NASB
Here we find the Lord God walking in the garden as He had many times before, however this time what had always been a welcoming sound to Adam and Eve, actually provokes a feeling of dread so much so that they hid from God. Notice that Adam said he was afraid because he was naked. His reason for being fearful was because he recognized that he was uncovered. He recognized that his covering was gone. As a result, for the first time Adam and Eve experienced the feelings of fear, embarrassment and shame. They had no knowledge of these emotions before eating the fruit. The consequence of these feelings caused Adam to all of a sudden, hide from his Creator whom he had walked with in perfect fellowship and harmony all his life.
I can’t help but think that even though an Infinite, Omniscient Being knew this would happen, there still had to be such a feeling of loss in the beautiful relationship with His creation.
God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”
Genesis 3:11 NASB
At this point, God asked two very profound questions. He asked Adam, who are you listening to and which tree are you eating from? Of course God knew the answer to these questions, but He wanted Adam to consider the source of his fear and shame. Adam had never known these emotions within himself. He had never experienced being afraid of anything let alone being afraid of his Creator. Adam had only known the feelings of love and peace and joy that he shared with his God.
