The gospel of Luke was probably written around AD 60 on scrolls or rolled books of pressed papyrus that could unroll to thirty-five feet in length. The original gospel is not extant, but copies close in time to the original are. Luke’s book is the longest of the gospels and begins with a prologue, much of which has already been discussed. It is not necessary to review Luke’s entire prologue again, but it would be informative to go back to the prologue and peek once more at the two Greek words translated into English as “eyewitnesses” and “servants.” These two words quickly demonstrate the interweaving of Greek medical language throughout Luke’s histories.
When Luke speaks of “eyewitnesses” he interviewed for information on Jesus, eyewitness in Greek is autoptēs, meaning, “to see for yourself ”—the medical term autopsy comes from this Greek word. Huperetēs, the other Greek word for “servant,” means “under-rower” or person in a subordinate role. Luke uses the word here for a disciple under Jesus. In medical parlance, it could mean hospital residents serving under the Great Physician. Luke the doctor wants everyone to know he used the “eyewitnesses and servants” to gather information, did his autopsy, and is now reporting on the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.
