The Church of Christ is a little more liberal in Southern California than it is in other parts of the country. It is a conservative denomination best known for a capella singing and for baptism as the point of salvation. In this vein of Christianity, a strong emphasis is placed on biblical knowledge, personal holiness, and evangelism. A wonderful family feeling exists in the Churches of Christ. But unfortunately very little emphasis is placed on the Holy Spirit, dealing with the enemy, or any forms of power for the believer. This is not the sort of beginning one would expect for the author of a book like this one. But strengths and weaknesses combined, it was a beginning I wouldn’t trade. It gave me a start in the Word that has proved indispensable.
Both of my parents came from a long heritage of believers (belonging to the Church of Christ) as far back as we can trace. The things I have done with my life would usually bring about a fair amount of warfare, but these many generations of faithfulness to God have allowed me measures of freedom for which I am so grateful. I have no conscious memory of ever not knowing God. I was born on a pew. I have no recollection of ever being without the strong heart’s knowing that God and I were intimately connected and that I belonged to Him. I used to feel awkward when people would ask for my testimony about coming to Christ because I don’t have one. My very earliest memories are washed in a worldview of faith. I was the kid who won the Bible Bowl every summer at Christian camp and knew all the words to “When I Survey” by the time I was three years old (and its four-part harmony of course, due to all that a capella singing).

Sarah Thiessen is a private practitioner and the founder of the Splankna Training Institute in Denver, Colorado. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and a licensed professional counselor. She holds a Bible degree in youth and family ministry and a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from Abilene Christian University. She lives in Parker, Colorado, with her husband, Jon, and three children.
