He rose from the chair, turned around, and placed his hands on his wife’s shoulder’s looking deep into her troubled brown eyes.
"We have never tried to tell the kids that being a believer is easy. They have to learn to depend on the Holy Spirit in these situations. It’s our responsibility to teach them how to do that."
"But sometimes Carl, I’m not sure I’m up to it. I just want to take them away from all this. Someplace where we can be free to worship God without someone watching over our shoulder all the time. Someplace where they will be safe. That's another thing, Carl. I don't feel safe anymore."
Her tears were rolling freely now. She slipped out of his arms, walked to the bedroom, pulled two tissues from the box on the nightstand, and began wiping her eyes. Carl slipped up behind her and gently put his hands on her shoulders. She did not turn around but leaned back against his chest, as if wanting to be alone with her thoughts, yet needing his security at the same time. He leaned his head against hers and planted a soft kiss on her ear.
"I share the same fear, hon. I don't know what kind of persecution is coming, but its not going to get any better. I do want you to know that I will protect you and the kids with the last ounce of my blood."
She wheeled around to face him, her brown eyes flashing anger through the tears.
"I don't want the last ounce of your blood, Carl!" She shouted. "I want you! I want my children! I just want us to be safe! Why doesn't God keep us safe, Carl? Why? Why?"

About the Book
Three families caught up in a wave of Christian persecution in a post-Christian United States try to hold on to their faith in Christ in spite of physical and mental abuse, the loss of all worldly possessions, and incarceration in a concentration camp. They fight against their adversaries with the only weapons they have: their wits and their extraordinary faith. While holding out hope for the second coming of Christ to deliver them from their spiritual enemies both worldly and satanic, they must hold on to their faith in spite of what seems like silence of Heaven.
About the Author
Harold L. Bowlby has been an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene for forty years. He is a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University and has pastored in Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana. He has written several articles and short stories for religious publications. This is his first novel. He is now retired. He and his wife, Billie Sue, live in Richmond, Indiana.
