Jesus wept.
Ah, the ultimate short memory verse! But do you remember why Jesus wept? As I stated earlier, Jesus' friend Lazarus had died. Lazarus' two sisters - especially Martha - had been talking to Jesus about it. Then Jesus finally asks to be taken to where they had buried him. Jesus loved His friend and wept for him. His death touched Jesus, showing his humanity to those who were curiously watching to see what would happen next. The story which unfolds in the next ten verses shows the humble power of the God-man, Jesus Christ. Weeping one minute over the loss of His friend, confidently raising him from the dead the next minute and restoring him to his family and friends. Lazarus wasn't the only one to experience the resurrecting power of Jesus.
I'm not sure when or how it all started, but it has been considered unmanly for males to cry. Part of the power of this short verse is the example Jesus set for males to express emotion when it is appropriate to do so. The loss of a loved one would certainly be considered appropriate. As God nurtures a caring heart in each of us, we can express that with the genuine demonstration of tears. If we are to follow Christ's example, let us not fail in this point to connecting emotionally with others.
"Creator of my emotions, may they bring glory to Your name as I use them to reach out to others."
