While I was sleeping under the apple tree, a native American man on a horse rode up to me. He wore a feathered head-dress and carried a spear. On either side of him rode two other horsemen.
‘Come with me! Right now!’ he shouted.
I yelled, ‘No. Never!’
They galloped away - then instantly returned with their tribal chief riding a white horse. Two of his scouts dismounted, picked me up, and plunked me down in front of the chief on the chief’s horse.
I could not move. I tried to scream but no words came out. We galloped away and were suddenly over a ridge and down into a valley. There were fields of wild flowers. I saw houses made of shining stones and villages of tepees made with silk. Farther away there were herds of different colored ponies.
The chief did not answer my questions. He asked me if I would stay with him there.
Again I yelled, ‘No! Never!’
Abruptly he turned his horse, and he and the others brought me back to the apple tree here. It all happened in a second.”

Kyle St. Claire, MDiv, STM, MBA, is a retired Episcopal clergyman. He has served parishes in eastern Pennsylvania and worked part-time as a drug-and-alcohol counselor. He has been married to Tam St. Claire, a leader of women’s advocacy groups, for forty-three years. They have two children, four grandchildren, and live in Furlong, Pennsylvania.
