Al Rowe was born in Blackfoot, Idaho, in the fall of 1940. His parents raised him in their small home, built by his father, north of the fairgrounds, where he lived until he entered high school. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1962. While in the Air Force, he graduated Intensive Russian Language Training at Syracuse University, earning enough credits to re-start his pre-enlistment college career. On leaving the Air Force, he married Julie Johnson, whom he had met while working at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska. Al and Julie moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where Al attended Idaho State University while Julie worked at getting her PHT (putting hubby through) degree. After graduating from Idaho State University in 1968, Al went to work for the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Maryland. While working at NSA, he became a born-again Christian and began to feel the need to be near family, so he moved the family back to Idaho in 1975 and went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad. They moved in 1978 to Omaha, Nebraska where Al worked as a technical writer and computer programmer at the Union Pacific Headquarters. Seeking an opportunity for career advancement and a warmer climate, the family moved to Fort Worth in 1983, where Al pursued his programming career until his retirement to Granbury, Texas in 2003.

After graduating from Idaho State University in 1968, he worked for the National Security Agency in Maryland until 1975. From then until 1983, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad Company, including the job of writing, editing, and publishing their Programmers’ Procedure Manual. Then he moved his family to Fort Worth, Texas, where he worked as a computer systems specialist and project manager until his retirement in 2003.
